The long and winding Pangani Road, through bush and traditional Tanzanian villages leads the traveller to the peace and tranquillity of Peponi Beach Resort. Peponi which is Swahili for ‘paradise’ is set among coconut, mango and cashew trees, and wild pigs steal in at night to forage for fruit, while the bush babies call from the tree tops.
Peponi is the ideal base from which to explore this region of East Africa; and there is a regular bus service from Tanga and Pangani. To the west are the Usambara Mountains with their amazing views, rains forests, and the Amani Nature Reserve. The Tongoni Ruins, a 10th century mosque with the largest collection of tombs of their type in East Africa, are just down the road.
Peponi Beach Resort has a fabulous pool area with a view of the Indian Ocean, and a fully licenced bar. An a-la-carte menu is available to suit all tastes.
Peponi's beach looks out onto the Pemba Channel, famous for deep sea fishing. Closer to shore you can swim and snorkel through tropical reefs with their rich and diverse abundance of marine life.
Ngalawas, a type of fishing dhow, can be hired from the local fishermen. Sail to the outer reefs and snorkel in the gardens of coral and observe the wonderful marine life such as the dazzling butterfly fish or the bold little clownfish. At the end of the day stroll along the unspoilt and safe beaches, explore the mangroves, or just relax in the warm waters. Watch the sun set over East Africa, and listen to the fish eagles call. |
